By Horace Palacio: The United Nations in Belize has issued a statement expressing deep concern over a series of tragic incidents resulting in the deaths of women and children within the country. The incidents, occurring both in domestic settings and public spaces, highlight an alarming issue.

“The right to life is a fundamental human right that must be upheld for all members of Belizean society,” the UN statement reads. “We offer our heartfelt condolences to the families impacted by these acts of domestic and gender-based violence. The United Nations remains committed to supporting Belize in building a society where everyone can live free from the threat of violence.”

The UN’s statement acknowledges that while Belize has made commitments to eradicate violence, particularly against women and girls, these recent events underscore the urgent need for further action.

The organization pledges its continued support to the Government of Belize and emphasizes the crucial role of civil society in taking concrete steps towards ensuring the rights and safety of women and children. This includes preventative measures and addressing the mental health needs of those affected by violence.
