Breaking Belize News Staff: A UN-backed food security body has confirmed that famine is now taking place in Gaza City and its surrounding areas. The Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC) has raised Gaza’s level to Phase 5, the highest classification, describing conditions of starvation, destitution, and death.
The report says more than half a million people are already facing catastrophic conditions across Gaza, with famine expected to spread further into Deir al-Balah and Khan Younis between mid-August and the end of September. It also projects that nearly a third of Gaza’s population, or 641,000 people, could fall into the worst category of famine conditions while another 1.14 million will face emergency levels of hunger.
Since the conflict began, at least 271 people, including 112 children, have died from famine and malnutrition according to Gaza’s health ministry. The IPC stressed that the crisis is man-made, pointing to restrictions on aid and food supplies.
UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres called the situation “a man-made disaster, a moral indictment, and a failure of humanity itself,” and warned that Israel has legal obligations under international law to ensure food and medical supplies reach civilians. UN aid chief Tom Fletcher also described the famine as entirely preventable if aid was allowed in.
Israel has dismissed the IPC report as “Hamas lies,” despite widespread condemnation from humanitarian organizations, UN agencies, and foreign governments.
