UN Belize partners with Universities to strengthen safeguards against Sexual exploitation and abuse

By Zoila Palma:  UN Belize has deepened its collaboration with the country’s leading academic institutions to strengthen protections against Sexual Exploitation and Abuse (SEA).

Recently, resident Coordinator Raul Salazar, alongside Heads of UN Agencies, held a high-level dialogue with representatives from the University of Belize, University of the West Indies Open Campus, Galen University, and St. John’s College University.

The meeting focused on supporting the implementation of the UN’s Zero Tolerance Policy on Sexual Exploitation and Abuse, particularly among implementing partners and educational communities.

During the engagement, participants discussed practical steps to promote accountability, transparency, and prevention measures across campuses.

The discussions highlighted the shared responsibility of universities to create safe learning environments and protect both students and staff from exploitation.

“Safeguarding our students, faculty, and communities requires proactive engagement and collective commitment,” Salazar emphasized.

As part of the initiative, each university received a package containing access to the UN PSEA online training portal, leadership resources for policy implementation, and communication materials to raise awareness on campus.
