UK’s biodiverse landscapes Fund boosts Conservation and Community empowerment in Belize

By Zoila Palma:  Belize’s forests are experiencing a quiet transformation, thanks to the UK’s Biodiverse Landscapes Fund (BLF).

From the scarlet macaws of the Chiquibul to honey-producing communities in La Gracia, the initiative is reshaping conservation by placing local communities, science, and resilience at the heart of its work.

Last week, a UK delegation visited Belize to witness the impact firsthand. Representatives from the British High Commission, the Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs, PricewaterhouseCoopers, and the UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office toured BLF-supported sites, met local communities, and engaged with Belizean conservation leaders to strengthen ongoing partnerships.

The Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS) leads the BLF consortium in Mesoamerica, coordinating efforts across the Maya Forest Corridor and Montañas Mayas–Chiquibul Massif.

WCS Belize has trained fire brigades, provided communities with drones and water-harvesting systems, and co-created climate-smart development plans with Indigenous Peoples and Local Communities.

Nicole Auil Gomez, Country Director for WCS Belize, emphasized, “When communities are empowered with knowledge, tools, and opportunity, conservation becomes part of daily life.”

During the visit, the delegation toured Succotz, Vaca Forest, Selena, and La Gracia, observing forest patrols, sustainable livelihoods projects, and climate-resilient agriculture.

Across these sites, BLF initiatives are enhancing biodiversity protection, reducing poverty, and strengthening governance.

The programme has already improved land rights for 50 communities and increased sustainable incomes for more than 2,000 women, highlighting Belize’s leadership in inclusive, landscape-scale conservation.
