By Zoila Palma:  The British High Commission has announced the winners of the UK–Belize Climate & Nature Legacy Awards 2026, recognising exceptional Belizean organisations, community leaders, and youth innovators whose work, supported through funding from the UK government, is driving joint progress on climate action, biodiversity protection, and sustainable livelihoods.

The Awards, funded by the UK’s Climate & Nature Diplomacy Fund (CNDF), reinforce the commitment to long lasting environmental partnerships and celebrate projects that demonstrate impact, innovation, community leadership, and measurable benefits for both nature and people.

The British High Commission in Belize noted that this year’s ceremony forms an important highlight in the UK–Belize environmental cooperation calendar, taking place alongside the culmination of 5 years of sustained joint efforts to strengthen Belize’s environmental resilience.

British High Commissioner to Belize, Mr. Alistair White, stated:

“As a fellow maritime nation, the UK understands that the world is changing rapidly, and that challenges we face such as climate change, biodiversity loss, and inequalities—demand even greater collaboration and innovation. Whether you represent government, academia, civil society, the private sector, or the next generation of leaders, your work is interconnected. Your achievements strengthen Belize. They strengthen our partnership and the global fight for a more sustainable world. This awards ceremony is a reminder that the relationship between the United Kingdom and Belize is strong, dynamic, and full of potential.”

The awards represent a rigorous, fair, and regionally grounded process designed to highlight genuine leadership and measurable impact across Belize and the wider Caribbean.

Nominations were sourced internally across multiple expert teams, ensuring a diverse and representative pool of candidates with firsthand knowledge of programme performance, community impact, and policy relevance.

Each nominated project underwent an independent evaluation guided by a detailed, category specific scoring matrix.

Zana Kristen Wade, the UK’s Climate, Environment and Energy Officer for Belize & the Caribbean, remarked:

“Tonight’s awards recognise leadership and innovation across governance, conservation, gender inclusion, disaster resilience, and economic development—but more than that, they recognise impact. They recognise the people who change lives quietly and consistently. The ones whose names may not always be in the headlines, but whose work leaves a lasting imprint on Belize’s communities, ecosystems, and institutions.”

“As Belize celebrates these outstanding achievements at the 2026 Climate & Nature Legacy Awards, this moment reflects the shared commitment, innovation, and leadership that continue to shape the UK–Belize partnership. The collective efforts recognised —combined with the steady progress made over the past five years of joint environmental cooperation—underscore a unified vision for a resilient, nature positive, and climate secure future,” the British High Commission expressed.
