By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Austria could have tied the game in the last minute of the match and forced extra time, but goalkeeper Mert Günok made an incredible save deflecting Christoph Baumgartner’s header from inside the penalty box, sending Türkiye to the Quarterfinals in the UEFA European Championship (EURO2024) on a 2-1 victory.
Türkiye started out with a blast at the Leipzig Stadium in Leipzig, Germany, as Merih Demiral shook the net with the fastest Euro knockout goal after just 57 seconds.
In a game that had both teams going at each other constantly, Demiral increased the lead to 2-0 in the 59th minute.
Austria fought back and cut one back when Michael Gregoritsch scored a whopper in the 66th.
Türkiye will now play against Netherlands, who cruised to a 3-0 win over Romania earlier, on Saturday, July 6. That same day England will face Switzerland.
The Quarterfinals get started on Friday, July 5, when Portugal challenge France and Spain tackle Germany.
