UEFA Euro 2024: England, Spain through to Quarterfinals

By Rubén Morales Iglesias: England and Spain advanced to the UEFA European Championship (EURO2024) Quarterfinals on Sunday.

England had to come from behind after conceding an early goal and beat Slovakia 2-1. Ivan Schranz put Slovakia ahead in the 25^th minute at the Arena AufSchalke in Gelsenkirchen, Germany.

When everyone had practically given up on England, the Three Lions scored two agonizing goals in stoppage time to turn the game around and gained their ticket to the Quarterfinals. Captain Harry Kane levelled the score in the 90’+1 and Jude Bellingham scored the game winner in 90’+5.

Spain also had to come from behind, but unlike England, they bounced back fast and then ran over Georgia 4-1 at Cologne Stadium in Cologne.

Robin Le Normand put Georgia ahead with an own goal in the 18^th minute.

Eighteen minutes later, Rodri tied the game to close the half at 1-1. Then, Fabián Ruiz scored the go-ahead goal for Spain in the 51^st before Niko Williams in the 75^th and Dani Olmo in the 83^rd secured a convincing 4-1 victory.

The day before, Switzerland shocked defending champions Italy 2-0 while Germany beat Denmark by a similar score. Remo Freuler (37’) and Ruben Vargas (46’) scored for Switzerland in their win at Olympiastadion in Berlin. Kai Havertz (53’) converted a penalty kick while Jamal Musiala (68’) scored the securing goal for Germany at BVB Stadium Dortmund in Dortmund.

Spain will play Germany on Friday, July 5 in the Quarterfinals while England will tackle Switzerland on Saturday, July 6.

The Round of 16 continues on Monday with France playing Belgium at 10:00 am and Portugal facing Slovenia at 1:00 pm.

On Tuesday, Romania will face Netherlands at 10:00 am and Austria will take on Türkiye at 1:00 pm.
