By Breaking Belize News Staff (HP): The UDP is raising fresh concerns over the government’s proposed National Health Insurance legislation, warning that Belizeans may eventually have to pay directly into the system.
Opposition Leader Tracy Panton accused the government of creating what she described as a “parallel fund” to Social Security through the proposed NHI authority bill. She argued that the legislation could legally pave the way for mandatory contributions from Belizean workers and pensioners.
Panton also questioned the increasing involvement of private healthcare providers within the NHI system, claiming the public healthcare sector is being weakened while more contracts are reportedly being signed with private institutions.
The opposition says Belizeans deserve full transparency about how the proposed healthcare model will function and who will ultimately bear the cost.
The healthcare reform proposal is expected to remain a widely debated issue nationwide in the coming months.
