By Aaron Humes: The Opposition United Democratic Party (UDP) has expressed support for the Occupational Safety and Health Bill, which was read a second and third time in the House of Representatives today. The Bill, nearly two decades in the making, aims to improve workplace safety and health standards in Belize.
In a statement, the UDP Parliamentary Caucus welcomed the Bill as a step in the right direction but emphasized that its passage alone is insufficient. They highlighted concerns, including broad inspector powers, reliance on Ministerial regulations, and a penalty notice system that may not deter violations.
The UDP recommends further improvements to make the Bill more effective, focusing on worker-centeredness, fairness, clarity, and compliance. They advocate for statutory timelines, safeguards against repeat violations, and regulations to support implementation.
The party applauds the National Trade Union Congress of Belize (NTUCB) for its advocacy and notes that its boycott of the House sitting does not negate its support for the Bill.
The UDP emphasizes that protecting Belize’s workforce is crucial for the nation’s wealth.
