By Zoila Palma:  Today, supporters of the United Democratic Party (UDP) joined Leader of the Opposition Tracy Panton protesting BTL’s proposed acquisition of Speednet Limited.

Panton reiterated that the UDP “does not support the proposed BTL acquisition of SpeedNet/SMART.”

“This transaction represents a major policy shift, a de facto C-Policy change, yet the Belizean people and their representatives have been given no credible information to justify it: no details on the decision-making basis; no clear new business model; and no proposed management structure,” Panton expressed.

Panton says that there has been “no audited financial statements presented to the public; no independent valuation of assets and liabilities and no guarantees of job security or fair treatment for employees.”

Panton said that “Belizeans must not be asked to sign a blank cheque with their money, their jobs, and their future. Full disclosure and proper due diligence must come first.”
