By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: The United Democratic Party (UDP) issued a statement expressing support for the Belize National Teachers Union (BNTU) in its stance “against the financial abuse of Belizean teachers by the cold and callous Briceno government.”
The UDP calls on the Government to “give teachers what they have earned and to deliver on promises made before the 2020 General Elections.”
In addition, the UDP says that by now, the Government should have already ironed out recurrent challenges that lead to delay in payment of increments, rural hardship, community and responsibility allowances.
“Teachers were promised a twenty percent (20%) salary increase; instead, their salary was cut, their increment frozen and thousands had their license revoked. Inflation the last four years has been back breaking and higher than any period in the history of Belize. Rather than adjusting teacher’s salary to keep pace with the rising cost of living, this government has withheld increments for the last few years forcing teachers to face a 2024 financial crisis with a 2020 wage,” the UDP said.
The party says that the Governor of the Central Bank recently painted a glowing picture about the state of the economy and questioned why increment has been withheld.
“The mandated CPD hours have been increased, forcing teachers to pay for more training from difficult to access workshops and accredited hours are not even be accurately recorded,” the UDP added.
