By Aaron Humes: The United Democratic Party (UDP) Parliamentarian Caucus has publicly condemned the recent incident involving the illegal placement of a Guatemalan flag on Sarstoon Island, which they describe as a serious violation of Belizean sovereignty. The incident, reportedly occurring under the watch of Guatemalan Armed Forces personnel, has sparked outrage among party officials and raised questions about the effectiveness of the government’s response to territorial threats.
In a statement issued today, the UDP Parliamentarian Caucus expressed disappointment over the government’s failure to prevent the incident. “The illegal placement of a Guatemalan flag on our soil, under the watch and with the support of Guatemalan Armed Forces personnel, is both an affront to our sovereignty and a threat to our territorial integrity,” the statement read. The caucus further criticized the government’s decision to address this breach behind closed doors, calling for a more transparent and assertive approach.
The UDP expressed concern that the Government’s pattern of reactive diplomacy has only served to embolden further aggressive actions in the Sarstoon region. They emphasized the importance of demonstrating that Belize’s borders are inviolable and that protecting the nation’s territorial integrity should be a priority for all Belizeans.
In response to the incident, the UDP has offered to collaborate with government officials and other stakeholders to ensure the dignity and independence of Belize remains uncompromised. “Belizeans are a peaceful people, but our sovereignty is non-negotiable. Sarstoon Island is Belize,” the caucus declared, reiterating their commitment to standing united against external challenges to the nation’s borders.
