By Aaron Humes: This morning outside the Belize Telemedia Limited (BTL) headquarters in Belize City, UDP protesters, led by Brian “Yellowman” Audinett, attempted to breach the compound. Police reportedly responded with tear gas to push back the crowd.
The protest, opposing BTL’s acquisition of Speednet Smart, began peacefully but threatened to turn violent as demonstrators tried to force their way into the BTL headquarters. Police and protest leaders calmed the situation.
UDP Leader Tracy Panton has expressed support for the protesters, stating the party will back any supporter charged during the demonstration. The protest is part of the UDP’s opposition to the BTL-Speednet deal, citing concerns over re-establishing a telecommunications monopoly and lack of transparency. They were joined by some members of the trade Union movement which has also expressed opposition.
A scheduled provisional vote on the acquisition by the Telemedia Board this morning was canceled. Separately, the Public Utilities Commission (PUC) is meeting to determine its response.
