By Horace Palacio: United Democratic Party (UDP) leader Moses “Shyne” Barrow has condemned Belize’s escalating violence, describing the country as “a failed state” during his address at the party’s political campaign launch on Saturday morning.
Barrow cited the recent murder of American real estate developer Boris Alexander Mannsfeld, who was found shot in the neck at his Maya Beach property. The police report confirmed that Mannsfeld’s wallet, containing cash, and a loaded firearm in its holster were found intact, ruling out robbery as a motive. Investigators are probing potential links to Mannsfeld’s legal disputes and a recent email he sent accusing government officials of involvement in a multimillion-dollar fraud scheme and the unsolved murders of Ricardo Borja and Darren Taylor.
“This gentleman, about a month ago, sent an email to clients, talking about government involvement in multimillion-dollar fraud and the murders of Ricardo Borja and Darren Taylor,” Barrow stated, suggesting a possible connection between the allegations and Mannsfeld’s death.
Barrow accused Police Minister Kareem Musa of failing to address the rise in crime, stating, “He has never showed up for the last five years.” Barrow argued that the combination of unchecked violence, poor leadership, and rising living costs is driving both citizens and investors away from Belize.
“We would wish that we lived in the Belize that John Briceño and his deplorable cadre talk about,” Barrow added, criticizing the Prime Minister’s administration.
The UDP leader concluded by promising that his party would prioritize restoring security and improving Belize’s quality of life if elected.
