UDP Leader raises concerns over alleged abduction of Joseph Budna

By Aaron Humes: The United Democratic Party (UDP) has expressed grave concern over the alleged abduction of Joseph Budna, a Belizean citizen convicted in crimes in both Belize and Guatemala. Budna, who escaped from a Guatemalan correctional facility in 2019, is believed to have been taken by external or internal forces and transferred to Guatemalan law enforcement.

UDP Leader Moses “Shyne” Barrow stated that the Government’s failure to promptly address the abduction erodes public trust and raises questions about the integrity of elected officials and the system of governance. The UDP demands a full investigation to hold those responsible accountable to the full extent of the law.

The UDP emphasizes that while they do not condone Budna’s crimes, they condemn any breach of sovereignty, human, and civil rights by external actors or internal forces. The party stresses that the Government of Belize must protect the rights of all its citizens, even those convicted of crimes.

The UDP is calling for a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding Budna’s abduction, citing concerns over the lack of transparency and accountability from the Briceño Administration. Audio circulating online, in which a voice purporting to be Budna’s alleges involvement by “police from Belize” in his abduction, has further fueled concerns.

The UDP warns that if one Belizean citizen can be abducted by foreign or state agents, then all citizens are at risk. The party insists that the government must ensure a proper extradition process is followed, protecting the rights of all Belizean citizens without favor or prejudice.
