By Aaron Humes: Five days before the scheduled National Convention called by dissident members of the United Democratic Party (UDP), Deputy Chairman Alberto August issued an official notice to Party delegates that if they participate, it will be in the formation of a new political party, not affiliated with the UDP.

August wrote, “It has been established, beyond the shadow of any doubt, that the October 20th NAP (New Alliance Party) convention is NOT a United Democratic Party (UDP) sanction or approved event. It is strictly an event to officially endorse the leadership of the NAP.”

August continued that “Standard Bearers and delegates of the United Democratic Party (UDP) are reminded that they are sworn to uphold the principles and ideals of the Party and to respect the Party’s Constitution. We should therefore not allow a disgruntled breakaway faction of the Party to twist the Party’s Constitution to accommodate their selfish agendas.”

Parliamentarians Patrick Faber and Tracey Taegar-Panton, who are joined by John Saldivar and Beverly Williams, insist they have not resigned from the party or from their Parliamentary seats, despite efforts by leader Moses “Shyne” Barrow to declare them “constructively resigned” by their actions against him and “expelled” per the Party’s Constitution.

August charges that the courts essentially have no jurisdiction over the UDP’s internal affairs: “Do not be misled by the ramblings about taking the matter to court. The legal system is established to interpret THE LAWS OF BELIZE. The UDP Constitution was not enacted by parliament it is therefore NOT a part of the laws of Belize. It is an internal instrument exclusively designed to govern the affairs and activities of the United Democratic Party. Unlike the laws of Belize which [have] to go to parliament for validation and subsequent interpretation by the courts, no amendment to the UDP Constitution is subject to parliamentary approval. Guided by its Constitution, the UDP governs its own affairs and processes.”

August calls on Party supporters to ignore the goings-on with the dissidents and continue to support the Party and its Leadership, which were recently confirmed to serve at least through the forthcoming General elections.

Meanwhile, there have been claims of threats and intimidation by party leadership of delegates and supporters of the dissident side ahead of the October 20 rally at Birds Isle, Belize City.
