UDP demands inquiry into fraudulent nationality and voter registration

By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: The United Democratic Party (UDP) has issued a statement demanding an inquiry into fraudulent nationality and voter registration.

“From way back in July when we received word of birth certificates being printed in San Pedro and other parts of the country, the United Democratic Party expressed our concerns about the risks involved in decentralizing the registering and certification of Belizean births. Now there are extremely concerning reports coming in from across the country that there are fraudulent birth certificates floating around that have led to Belizean passports and social security cards being issued to unqualified foreign nationals with intent to register to vote,” the UDP said.

The UDP added that a birth certificate is the most important nationality document of any country and is an automatic declaration of nationality and gives individuals the right to apply for social security, passport and voter registration.

“Unfortunately, it is the least guarded of all nationality files. The ill-conceived decision to allow such a treasured document to be printed on street corners and political offices across this country and the widespread fraud that ensued as a result of this decentralization must be investigated thoroughly by an independent commission,” the UDP added.

The UDP claims that people are entering Belize from Guatemala and applying for social security cards using flagged birth certificates.

The UDP alleges that in Corozal, there are 80 compromised birth certificates.

The UDP says that sources claim birth certificates ending with serial numbers 301 to 379 and 775 were flagged.

“The fact that this is happening during a national amnesty program, a late birth registration drive and months before a General Election is no accident. We call on social partners to join in the call for an audit of the Vital Statistics Unit, Immigration Department and Voters List and a thorough investigation to be executed by an independent commission on this grave national security breach,” the UDP expressed.
