By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: The United Democratic Party (UDP) is calling on Prime Minister John Briceño to restore the full provisions of the Belize Defence Force.
The UDP noted that they have received complaints from BDF soldiers that items on their list of provisions have been cut down or out completely are extremely concerning.
“A government that is squeezing more taxes from the pockets of citizens than any in history should be making an effort to ensure our men and women in uniform are getting more of what they need to perform effectively, not less,” the UDP said.
“If the cost of commodities is too high for government to keep up with its food bill, we recommend that the Ministry of Defence first cut out the fat in those contracts to food suppliers before cutting down on ration. By eliminating the middle men, government can provide even more provisions than what our soldiers have been taking out to the jungle on two week tours,” the UDP added.
The UDP says that the BDF well-being should be a priority and that it is “demoralizing to soldiers to see the same government that was prepared to approve a 140 percent increase in bogus telephone allowance for CEOs and other highest income earners make a claim that their ration must be cut due to financial constraints. Any government that can find $200 million to settle uncollectable debts can find a fraction of that to properly feed our armed forces.”
The UDP therefore demanded the restoration of full provisions to the BDF soldiers immediately.
