By Aaron Humes: Leader of the United Democratic Party (UDP) Moses “Shyne” Barrow has written to Prime Minister John Briceño, requesting the immediate release of unedited surveillance footage from several government offices and statutory bodies in Orange Walk Town. The footage, dated August 22, 2025, is believed to be crucial in investigating the alleged abduction of Joseph Budna. It joins the call of several media companies issued earlier today.
Barrow emphasizes that releasing the footage is essential to ensure transparency and restore public trust, given the allegations against the Commissioner of Police and other officers. The party reiterates its call for an independent investigation into Budna’s abduction, citing the compromised integrity of the current investigation led by the Commissioner of Police.
The grainy low-quality footage released by Channel 7 News, appears to show four plainclothes police officers, including a Special Branch officer, abducting Budna. This contradicts the Commissioner of Police’s initial statement that he saw no police involvement.
Barrow urges the Prime Minister to consult with social partners and the opposition to appoint an independent investigation team. “Prime Minister, this shocking crime, [which] has upended the nation’s sense of security and confidence in the state, took place in your Orange Walk Central constituency, one day after you had a public argument with Budna. [As] I said publicly, I repeat that I do not want to believe that you had any knowledge of or sanctioned this crime in any way, thus I implore you to release the requested footage immediately and consult with the Social Partners and Opposition to appoint an independent investigation team so that those who committed this egregious act can be held accountable and our confidence can be restored in the state that is sworn to serve and protect us.”
