By Zoila Palma: As Belize prepares for the upcoming general elections on March 12, 2025, the United Democratic Party (UDP) has unveiled its manifesto with a focus on revitalizing the agriculture sector.
The party aims to ensure food security, promote sustainable farming practices, and support the livelihoods of Belizean farmers.
This is part of the UDP’s broader plan to address the country’s economic challenges and unseat the current People’s United Party (PUP) administration.
The UDP says that it will provide farmers with easier access to low-interest loans through the Development Finance Corporation (DFC) and the National Bank.
These loans will enable farmers to purchase modern equipment and technology, enhancing productivity while reducing production costs.
In addition, the UDP said that to ease the burden on farmers, the UDP plans to reduce taxes on essential agricultural inputs, such as fertilizers and pest control chemicals.
The UDP also commits to improving the nation’s farm infrastructure by allocating adequate funds for the construction of new farm roads and the upgrading of existing ones.
To protect farmers from the devastating effects of natural disasters and climate-related challenges, the UDP plans to establish a National Agriculture Disaster Relief Fund. This fund will provide financial assistance to farmers affected by crop diseases, floods, hurricanes, and other adverse conditions.
With these promises, the UDP says that it is focused on modernizing Belize’s agriculture sector, boosting local production, and securing food sustainability for the future.
