By Rubén Morales Iglesias: The University of Belize (UB) Toledo Campus has officially named one its buildings the Stanley Nicholas Conference Hall, honouring a son of the soil whose leadership helped establish and shape UB’s presence in the south. The unveiling, held as part of UB’s 25th Anniversary celebrations, reflects the institution’s enduring commitment to access, equity, and regional development.
“Today, we mark two major milestones for this country,” said UB President Dr. Vincent Palacio during the ceremony. “First, the naming of the Stanley Nicholas Conference Hall. I happen to be in that space: the Stanley Nicholas Conference Hall. His legacy lives on in the values and service and leadership that we aim to instill in every UB graduate. This hall will serve as a space for dialogue, a space for learning, and a space for engagement.”
The Stanley Nicholas Conference Hall plaque reads: “Mr Stanley Nicholas – In recognition of his vision and unwavering dedication to higher education in Belize, as proven by his relentless efforts and outstanding leadership in pioneering the establishment, growth, and development of the University of Belize Toledo Campus.”
Nicholas, who was present at the ceremony, expressed gratitude for the recognition.

The Stanley Nicholas Conference Hall will host academic forums, community meetings, and regional collaboration—further embedding UB’s role as a national institution rooted in service and engagement.
The second unveiling featured the launch of UB’s fully-equipped Digital Connect Center, a modern facility designed to expand digital access for students and community members. Developed in partnership with the Ministry of E-Governance and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), the center includes high-speed internet, updated computers, training space, and on-site support.
“In today’s world, digital access is essential,” Dr. Palacio added. “This center will empower our students and community members with the tools and training needed to succeed. For this, we are grateful to our partnership with UNDP and with the Ministry of E-Governance.”
