U21 Central American Men’s Volleyball Championship: Belize remain in third place, poised for a medal on Thursday

By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Despite being inactive on Wednesday, the Belize Men’s National Volleyball Team maintained their third-place standing over Costa Rica in the 20^th Under 21 Central American AFECAVOL Men’s Volleyball Championship at the Gimnasio Papa Francisco in Chitré, in Panama.

Costa Rica beat Nicaragua on Wednesday 3-2 (16-25, 25-21, 19-25, 25-17, 15-6), equaling Belize’s 3-2 record, but their points total of 13 is two points shy of Belize’s.

With one remaining game for everyone, a 3-0 victory over Nicaragua (2-3) on Thursday secures third place for Belize or possibly second if Costa Rica beats Panama in the final game of the tournament.

Guatemala secured the gold medal on Wednesday with their 3-2 (25-23, 23-25, 19-25, 25-22, 15-10) win over Panama, improving to a 5-0 record ahead of Panama’s 4-1.

In the other game on Wednesday, El Salvador recorded their first win, defeating Honduras 3-0 (25-16, 25-15, 25-14). El Salvador are in sixth place with a 1-4 record, while hapless Honduras finished in last place, having suffered six consecutive losses.

The regional tournament closes on Thursday with games starting one hour earlier to allow for the closing ceremonies. El Salvador open against Belize at 1:00 pm, Guatemala take on Nicaragua at 3:30 pm, and Panama close against Costa Rica at 6:00 pm.
