U21 Central American Men’s Volleyball Championship: Belize go for victory over Honduras on Tuesday, still hope to make podium

By Rubén Morales Iglesias: The Belize Men’s National Volleyball Team may have lost a heartbreaker on Monday night to Panama, but on Tuesday they are set to take the court again, this time against Honduras in their quest to win a medal at the 20^th Under 21 Central American AFECAVOL Men’s Volleyball Championship in Chitré, Panama.

The 3-2 (24-26, 25-22, 20-25, 25-23, 18-16) loss to Panama dented Belize’s quest for gold, and though it knocked them down to fourth place, the possibility of stepping on the podium on Thursday is still alive. However, it’s going to be rather difficult as Belize, now with a 2-2 record, only have two games left while Costa Rica, who grabbed third place on Monday, have three left and have a better record with two wins and one loss. Guatemala and Panama, both 3-0, seem unreachable at the moment. Unless they falter, they seem headed to the top two spots.

However, Belize have what would be considered two ‘easy’ games against winless Honduras (0-4) at 4:30 pm on Tuesday and El Salvador (0-4) at 1:00 pm on Thursday. Guatemala, Panama, and Costa Rica still have to face each other plus Nicaragua. Guatemala play Costa Rica on Tuesday, Panama on Wednesday, and Nicaragua on Thursday. Panama face Nicaragua on Tuesday, Guatemala on Wednesday, and Costa Rica on Thursday. Costa Rica face Guatemala on Tuesday, Nicaragua on Wednesday, and Panama on Friday.

Two 3-0 wins would put Belize at 4-2 and 20 points and may help our national team to gain, at least, the bronze medal. Difficult, but not impossible.

So far, Belize defeated Nicaragua 3-0 (25-15, 25-21, 29-27) on Friday, October 11, and Costa Rica 3-2 (25-20, 25-20, 17-25, 25-27, 15-13) on Saturday, October 12. But then fell on Sunday, October 13, 3-0 (25-19, 27-25, 25-14) to Guatemala, and on Monday night to Panama.

The tournament continues on Tuesday at 2:00 pm with Guatemala facing Costa Rica. Belize then take on Honduras at 4:30 pm before Panama host Nicaragua at 7:00 pm.
