By Rubén Morales Iglesias: The U17 Belize Women’s National Team (U17 BWNT) face the Dominican Republic today, Friday, at 7:00 pm in a crucial Group A encounter at the Miguel “Chocorrón” Buitrago Stadium in Managua, Nicaragua, as the CONCACAF U17 Qualifiers continue.
Belize currently stand third in the group with three points, earned from their 3–0 victory over Dominica on Wednesday. The U17 BWNT opened the tournament with a loss to hosts Nicaragua, who now lead Group A with nine points after winning all three of their matches and scoring 27 goals without conceding.
The Dominican Republic are no easy contenders, having won their two matches by blowouts totalling 18 unanswered goals — a 7–0 victory over Dominica followed by an 11–0 win against the U.S. Virgin Islands. Nicaragua, meanwhile, have been even more dominant, opening with a 6–0 win over Belize, then wiping out Dominica 9–0, before smashing the U.S. Virgin Islands 12–0 to maintain a perfect record.
The Dominican Republic sit second with six points, while Dominica and the U.S. Virgin Islands remain without points.
Belize’s 3-0 win over Dominica featured a brace from Kiana Lewis in the 24th and 30th minutes—assisted by Betsy Pérez and Sophie Ellis—and a late finish from Jolene Aranda in the 79th minute.
After tonight’s match against the Dominican Republic at 7:00 pm, the U17 BWNT will close out group play against the U.S. Virgin Islands on Monday at 4:00 pm.
The young Belizean side continue to gain valuable international experience as they represent the country on the regional stage.
