By Breaking Belize News Staff: The Government of Belize has confirmed it is reviewing a proposal from the United States that would see Belize become a “Safe Third Country,” a designation that would allow the U.S. to send asylum seekers here for processing instead of allowing them into U.S. territory.
Foreign Affairs Minister Francis Fonseca acknowledged that the U.S. has submitted draft documents and is seeking Belize’s agreement, similar to deals already made with Mexico, Guatemala, Honduras, and Guyana.
Fonseca told reporters, “They have raised it with us. They’ve provided some draft documents. We’re reviewing them through our Attorney General’s ministry. Once that process is done, the Cabinet will have a discussion if the Prime Minister deems it appropriate.”
While speculation swirls about pressure from the U.S., Fonseca insisted there’s no undue force. “We’ve made it clear: yes, we understand the importance of the matter, but it has to go through our process here in Belize. Once we conclude that, we’ll be happy to sit down and talk with them.”
Asked if he personally supports the proposal, Fonseca was cautious. “No, no. I don’t want to get ahead of Cabinet.”
Belize has not yet signed a “Safe Third Country Agreement,” and no timeline has been set for a final decision.
