By Aaron Humes: The long-standing practice of Cuba sending medical personnel to Belize, a collaboration that began in 1990, is now facing scrutiny from the United States government. This new concern centers around allegations that these medical missions amount to forced labor.

In a recent press statement, the U.S. State Department headed by Cuban-American Secretary Marco Rubio announced an expansion of an existing visa restriction policy. According to the statement, the restrictions will apply to “current or former Cuban government officials, and other individuals, including foreign government officials, who are believed to be responsible for, or involved in, the Cuban labor export program, particularly Cuba’s overseas medical missions.” This policy will also affect the immediate families of those deemed involved in these operations.

The Belize-Cuba Solidarity Group has weighed in, standing firmly behind the “dedication and commitment” of Cuban doctors to serving millions around the world, especially in impoverished countries, in “a true spirit of humanitarianism.”

American efforts to penalize Cuba threaten others’ health and safety as well – in Belize’s case, thousands attended by physicians from the island since 1990. Many Belizean students also attend Cuban colleges on scholarship.

The US government’s increased scrutiny comes at a critical time, raising questions about how such restrictions could impact health services in Belize. Belize has relied heavily on Cuban medical brigades for decades, which have been instrumental in providing essential medical care to underserved communities throughout the country.

In light of this development, local health officials are seeking clarity on the potential consequences of these restrictions. The Ministry of Health and Wellness has been contacted for comments regarding how this policy might influence the delivery of health services across Belize in the near future.

The BCSG calls for removal of all “coercive measures” against Cuba, including the lifting of the economic embargo and removal from the U.S.’s list of state sponsors of terrorism and the support of the international community.
