U.S. report flags corruption, political influence and lack of transparency as barriers to investment in Belize

By Breaking Belize News Staff (HP): Belize continues to face serious concerns over corruption, political influence and government transparency, according to the United States Department of State’s 2026 Investment Climate Statement.

The report identifies corruption concerns, bureaucratic delays, land insecurity and inconsistent regulatory enforcement as persistent obstacles affecting the country’s investment climate.

According to the assessment, American and other foreign investors have complained about undue influence by politically powerful stakeholders, difficulties obtaining government approvals and a lack of transparency in procurement and dispute resolution.

The report also highlights concerns that politicians from both major political parties have used their positions to benefit constituents and political allies.

These complaints involve business licenses, importation of goods, government contracts and the transfer of government land into private ownership.

While Belize has laws criminalizing corruption and requiring financial disclosures from public officials, the report says enforcement remains inadequate.

It also points to weaknesses in oversight institutions, including the Integrity Commission, and concerns about political influence in government procurement.

The State Department acknowledges that Belize has undertaken reforms to improve its business environment, including modernizing registration systems and strengthening financial regulation.

However, the report makes clear that governance and transparency remain important concerns for investors.

The findings raise questions about whether Belize’s existing accountability mechanisms are sufficient to ensure that businesses compete on a fair and transparent basis.
