By Breaking Belize News Staff: United States Ambassador to Belize André Bauer personally handed out backpacks filled with school supplies to primary school students during a visit to Zion Park Methodist Primary School in Santana Village on Thursday.
Bauer was joined by locally employed staff of the U.S. Embassy in Belmopan for the distribution, which also included supplies for teachers. In photographs shared by the Embassy, the newly appointed ambassador is seen interacting directly with the children and handing backpacks to students.
The Embassy described the initiative as part of its continuing commitment to education and opportunity across Belize.
Thursday’s donation continues a years-long pattern of U.S. Embassy support for Belizean students. In 2022, the Embassy provided 500 backpacks containing school supplies to students of Carmelita and Santa Martha Government Schools in the Orange Walk District.
In 2016, the Embassy donated more than 150 backpacks to a back-to-school drive for children in residential care facilities; records from that initiative indicate then-Deputy Chief of Mission Adrienne Galanek participated in the distribution rather than then-Ambassador Carlos Moreno.
And Bauer is not the first U.S. ambassador to personally get involved in handing the bags to Belizean children. In January 2023, then-Ambassador Michelle Kwan personally distributed backpacks and school supplies during a visit to San Jose Government School in Orange Walk. News 5 reported Kwan describing the experience of “passing out school supplies, backpacks to the students,” while the Embassy’s contribution of school supplies was valued at approximately US$8,000.
Bauer was sworn in as U.S. Ambassador to Belize in August and recently began his assignment in the country.
