By Horace Palacio: A global tech outage continued to disrupt U.S. airlines on Sunday, causing the cancellation of over 1,000 flights for the third consecutive day.
Delta Air Lines was among the hardest hit, canceling over 600 flights by Sunday afternoon. United Airlines, American Airlines, and Allegiant Travel Co. also reported significant cancellations and delays.
The outage, linked to a faulty software update by cybersecurity firm CrowdStrike Holdings Inc, has impacted millions of devices worldwide. Airlines are struggling to restore normal operations due to the laborious process of manually rebooting thousands of computers at airport gates.
“Recovering from this outage is proving to be a slow and arduous process,” a Delta spokesperson said. The airline is offering affected passengers travel vouchers, waivers, and frequent flyer miles as compensation.
The disruptions have left thousands of passengers stranded, including those with connecting flights to international destinations such as Belize. Some travelers have reported difficulties obtaining refunds for canceled flights, despite U.S. regulations requiring airlines to do so.
The U.S. Department of Transportation is urging affected passengers to contact their airlines directly for updates and to file complaints if they encounter issues with refunds or customer service.
Travelers, particularly those with upcoming flights, are advised to check their flight statuses and communicate with airlines for the latest information.
