Tyrique Swaso sentenced to 12 years for stabbing Emroy Tracey to death in 2022 on manslaughter charge

By Breaking Belize News Staff: Tyrique Swaso, one of two men accused in the 2022 stabbing death of 23-year-old call center agent Emroy Tracey, was sentenced to 12 years in prison, on Friday, after pleading guilty to manslaughter.

Justice Nigel Pilgrim handed down the sentence this morning in the High Court. Swaso, who was represented by attorney Norman Rodriguez, must first complete an existing sentence for possession of a controlled drug before beginning his 12-year prison term.

Swaso and his co-accused, Gilroy Howard Thomas, were initially charged jointly with Tracey’s murder. However, both later pleaded guilty to the lesser charge of manslaughter. Thomas was sentenced to 12 years imprisonment earlier this year on July 24, 2025.

Tracey, a resident of #3 Iguana Street, Belize City, was fatally stabbed on the night of March 5, 2022, at the corner of Iguana and Curassow Streets. The fatal encounter reportedly stemmed from an altercation between the men.

With Swaso’s sentencing, both men involved in the deadly incident have now been held accountable and will each serve 12 years behind bars for Tracey’s death.
