By Breaking Belize News Staff: Three years after the fatal stabbing of 23-year-old call center agent Emroy Tracey, the second man accused in the case, Tyrique Swaso, has pleaded guilty to the lesser charge of manslaughter. Swaso’s plea was entered late Wednesday before Justice Nigel Pilgrim in the High Court of Belize City.
Swaso, who was originally charged with murder, joined his co-accused, former security guard Gilroy Howard Thomas, 28, who had earlier pleaded guilty to the same lesser offense in July 2025. Thomas was sentenced to 20 years, but received a 12-year effective sentence after deductions for his early plea and mitigating factors.
Swaso, represented by attorney Norman Rodriguez, was set to stand trial for murder — a charge carrying a possible sentence of 25 years to life imprisonment — but instead opted to plead guilty to manslaughter. Justice Pilgrim accepted his plea, and Swaso is expected to be sentenced on Friday, October 17, 2025.
According to police, on March 5, 2022, around 3:45 p.m., officers responded to reports of a stabbing at the corner of Iguana and Currasow Streets in Belize City. When they arrived, Emroy Tracey had already been rushed to the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital suffering from multiple stab wounds.
Investigations revealed that Tracey had been socializing at a yard on Iguana Street when an argument broke out between him and two other men — later identified as Thomas and Swaso. During the altercation, one of the men reportedly pulled a knife and stabbed Tracey.
Tracey was admitted in critical condition but succumbed to his injuries around 6:15 p.m. the same day. A blood-stained knife was recovered from the scene by police and taken in as evidence.
Both men were jointly charged for murder, but with their guilty pleas to manslaughter, the long-running case is now nearing its conclusion. Swaso will learn his fate when he returns to court for sentencing on Friday.
