By Breaking Belize News Staff: Two residents of San Pedro were remanded to the Belize Central Prison on Tuesday after being charged with gang membership, one of whom is another member of the well-known Espat family.
Karim Nazim Espat, 28, and Bryan Anthony Correa, 27, both of the DFC Area in San Pedro Town, appeared on Tuesday afternoon before Magistrate Ludlow Black in Court #6 at the Belize City Magistrate’s Court. The men were each charged with a single count of being a member of a gang, allegedly affiliated with the San Pedrito Gang, which police say is involved in serious criminal activity on the island.
Represented by attorney David McKoy, Espat pleaded not guilty to the charge, as did Correa. However, due to the nature of the offense—which falls under Section 16 of the Crime Control and Criminal Justice Act—bail could not be granted at the Magistrate’s level. Magistrate Black informed both men that they may apply to the High Court for bail.
Before his client was remanded, attorney McKoy raised a complaint regarding Espat’s treatment while in police custody in San Pedro. McKoy told the court that Espat was allegedly denied food and that meals brought by family members were withheld by police officers.
Both Espat and Correa are scheduled to return to court in San Pedro on September 18, 2025.
The charges come just one day after two other island residents, Alexander Logan and Mark Anthony Espat—another member of the Espat family—were also charged with gang membership. They too pleaded not guilty and are due back in court on September 24, 2025.
Authorities continue to crack down on alleged gang activity in San Pedro, with the San Pedrito Gang now under increased scrutiny.
