By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Over the weekend, 2 devastating traffic incidents claimed the lives of 7 people and left several others injured.
The first tragedy occurred late Friday night on the Thomas Vincent Ramos Highway, between Elridgeville and Jacintoville.
The collision involved a Ford F350, driven by Emilio Lizama, 43, and a Toyota pickup driven by Jose Tush, 51.
Police reports indicate Lizama’s truck collided with the Toyota after another vehicle attempted to overtake a motorcycle, impacting Lizama’s vehicle head-on.
The collision resulted in the deaths of Jose Tush, who tragically died behind the wheel; his daughter Renieta Tush, 17, who was thrown from the vehicle and pronounced dead at the scene; and Michael Tush, 5, who succumbed to injuries at the hospital.
Several other passengers sustained injuries and were treated at Punta Gorda Hospital.
Police have since served Lizama with a Notice of Intended Prosecution (NIP).
The second fatal incident occurred early Sunday morning on the Philip Goldson Highway, between miles 45 and 46.
The collision involved a grey Mitsubishi Montero Sport driven by Cecilio De Jesus Arana, 41, and a black Pontiac Vibe SUV driven by Jesus Chi from Palmar Village.
The Mitsubishi was headed towards Belize City while the Pontiac was travelling in the opposite direction. The Pontiac lost control and collided head-on with the Mitsubishi.
Tragically, the crash claimed the lives of Cecilio De Jesus Arana, Gustavo Chi, Angelita Chi, and an unidentified male passenger.
The scene was described as harrowing, with Cecilio Arana found motionless in the driver’s seat of the Mitsubishi, and Gustavo Chi and Angelita Chi sustaining severe injuries.
Jesus Chi, the driver of the Pontiac, was trapped with significant wounds to both knees.
Police Constable Andy Garcia, a passenger in the Mitsubishi, suffered a broken right foot and facial cuts.
Investigations into the incident are ongoing to determine the exact cause of the collision.
These tragic events have sent shockwaves through their communities.
