Two cops charged with extortion after detainee allegedly arranged $4,000 payment to be released from custody

By Breaking Belize News Staff: Two members of the Belize Police Department, including a police sergeant, have been jointly charged with extortion following allegations that a detainee arranged a $4,000 payment to secure his release from police custody.

Assistant Superintendent of Police Stacy Smith confirmed during Wednesday’s police briefing that 48-year-old Police Sergeant Bron Peters and 40-year-old Police Constable Osel Aguilar have been formally arrested and charged.

According to Smith, the charges stem from a complaint made by an individual who reported that, while detained by police on September 24, 2026, he arranged for $4,000 to be handed over in exchange for his release.

The allegation prompted a police investigation, which subsequently resulted in criminal charges being brought against both officers.

The charges come amid renewed scrutiny of alleged misconduct within law enforcement. On Monday, BBN reported that another police constable had been charged with the theft of more than $26,000 worth of government fuel.

Police have not disclosed the circumstances surrounding the complainant’s original detention or whether the alleged $4,000 payment was ultimately delivered.

Both officers now face criminal proceedings in connection with the allegations, which have not been proven in court.
