By Breaking Belize News Staff (HP): Two minors from August Pine Ridge Village, Orange Walk, are currently under medical observation at the Northern Regional Hospital (NRH) after reportedly ingesting a substance believed to be poison on Sunday evening.
According to police reports, around 7:20 p.m. on March 22, 2026, CIB personnel responded to information that two children had been taken to NRH after consuming contaminated food.
Investigations revealed that a 34-year-old caretaker stated that at approximately 6:20 p.m., while securing a neighbor’s home under her care, she took a plastic bag containing three sweet breads, unaware that the items allegedly contained an unknown poisonous substance.
The caretaker later gave the bread to her children, a 16-year-old girl and a 7-year-old boy. Shortly after taking a bite, the teenager reportedly noticed a white powdery substance on the bread and began experiencing difficulty breathing. The younger child also took a bite but spat it out after feeling dizzy.
The children were immediately rushed to the Northern Regional Hospital, where they received medical attention.
Police indicated that the exact substance ingested remains unknown. However, both minors are reported to be in stable condition and remain hospitalized for observation.
Investigations into the incident are ongoing.
