By Breaking Belize News Staff (HP): The Belize Fisheries Department has seized a substantial quantity of seafood suspected to have been illegally imported into the country.

Fisheries officers, with assistance from the Belize Police Department, intercepted a pickup truck along the Hattieville-Boom Road following a brief pursuit during an early morning enforcement operation on Thursday.

An inspection of the vehicle turned up 290 pounds of tilapia fillets, 335 pounds of jumbo shrimp and 14 octopus.

The vehicle and the seafood were seized and secured.

Two adult males were detained and charged with offences relating to the alleged illegal importation of fisheries products. They are expected to appear before the Belize City Magistrate’s Court on Friday.

The Fisheries Department reminded the public that importing fish and fisheries products into Belize requires the appropriate permits and full compliance with applicable laws.

The Department said unauthorised importation poses food safety and phytosanitary risks, and undermines legitimate local businesses that follow the regulatory requirements.

The Department thanked the Belize Police Department for its assistance.
