By Breaking Belize News Staff: Two Belize City construction workers were fined $505 each after pleading guilty to going equipped to commit theft when police caught them with tools they admitted were intended to be used to steal copper wire.
Edward Montes, 46, a construction worker and electrician, and Kenrick Gonzales, a construction worker, both of Police Street, appeared unrepresented before a Senior Magistrate in Court #2 on Wednesday.
According to police, the men were spotted hiding on the compound of the former Renco Battery business on October 30, 2026, while officers were conducting mobile patrols.
When questioned about their presence on the property, one of the men reportedly remained silent. Officers subsequently discovered pliers, electrical tape and power cable in the area.
Police say Montes admitted, “I came to get the copper out of the power line.”
Both men pleaded guilty to going equipped and were fined $505 each.
However, Montes faces an additional charge of resisting lawful arrest after allegedly pushing a police officer and struggling with officers as they attempted to detain him.
Montes pleaded not guilty to that charge and was granted bail of $300. His next court appearance is scheduled for January 29, 2027, when disclosure is expected to be provided.
The resisting arrest allegation remains before the court.
