By Breaking Belize News Staff: Nyrere Parchue was shot to the head while climbing the perimeter fence of the Belize Central Prison compound during an escape attempt at the prison on Tuesday morning. Parchue has had a troubled last few weeks as his mother told the court just a few weeks ago that he had threatened to kill his whole family. In another incident just a few days later, he punched an 8-year-old nephew in the face.

Parchue was remanded to prison on July 21 after the incident with his nephew. Ultimately, he was given bail for that charge but pending fines from unrelated traffic charges led to his remand. His mother had also previously told the court that Parchue had a bullet lodged in his head from an attempt on his life years ago. Parchue was shot to the head in 2018 when he survived a robbery attempt and was shot while struggling with the robber.

In court, Parchue claimed he was merely disciplining the boy, saying, “I only gave him a tiny little bat. Nothing much, you know.” According to medical reports, however, the child had visible swelling to the left side of his face measuring approximately one centimeter.

Despite facing a potential five-year prison sentence for the offense, Parchue was spared jail time and instead fined $800. However, Parchue’s freedom was short-lived. Due to outstanding court fines totaling $360 from three traffic convictions the week before—including driving without insurance, with no valid driver’s license, and with an unlicensed vehicle—he was ordered to pay $150 immediately to avoid further detention. Unable to pay, he was remanded to the Belize Central Prison.

His condition at this time is unconfirmed but according to reports when he arrived at the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital (KHMH) he was still alive despite reportedly being shot to the head and neck.
