By Horace Palacio: While residents of Belize enjoy sunny skies with isolated showers today, meteorologists are closely monitoring a developing weather system in the Gulf of Mexico that poses a potential threat to the region. The system, currently a broad area of low pressure located over the southwestern Gulf, has a high chance of developing into a tropical depression or storm later today or Sunday.

This comes as Belize keeps a watchful eye on two active hurricanes in the Atlantic. Hurricane Leslie, with maximum sustained winds of 80 mph, is currently churning west-northwestward far off in the Atlantic Ocean and poses no immediate threat to land. However, Hurricane Kirk, a powerful Category 4 hurricane with winds of 125 mph, is moving north-northwestward and could potentially impact the Northern Leeward Islands.

The National Meteorological Service of Belize is urging residents to stay informed about the developing situation in the Gulf of Mexico. The potential storm is expected to move slowly eastward, bringing increased chances of showers and thunderstorms, particularly to northern and coastal areas of Belize by Sunday night.

Current forecasts for Belize predict sunny skies with cloudy spells today and partly cloudy conditions tonight. Temperatures will remain warm, reaching 90°F (32°C) along the coast and 94°F (34°C) inland. Seas are expected to be slight, with waves of 1-3 feet.

Residents are advised to monitor official weather updates and take necessary precautions as the situation evolves.
