By Horace Palacio: The National Hurricane Center (NHC) is closely monitoring two developing weather systems in the Atlantic Ocean with the potential to form tropical cyclones in the coming week. While neither system currently poses a direct threat to Belize, their proximity and potential for intensification have raised concerns.
The first disturbance, a post-tropical cyclone in the southwestern Caribbean Sea, has a low chance of redevelopment but could encounter more favorable conditions as it moves towards the Yucatan Peninsula.
The second disturbance, a tropical wave east of the Lesser Antilles, has a higher probability of development and could strengthen into a tropical depression or storm as it tracks westward across the Caribbean.
Though the exact paths of these systems remain uncertain, potential impacts on Belize include heavy rainfall, strong winds, and rough seas.
As the 2024 hurricane season progresses, Belize’s National Emergency Management Organization (NEMO) is monitoring the situation and preparing for potential threats. Residents are urged to stay informed, prepare emergency kits, and follow official guidance.
