By Horace Palacio: Tropical Storm Nadine, the fifteenth named tropical cyclone of the 2024 hurricane season, has formed in the northwest Caribbean. As of 5 a.m., the storm is moving west at 8 mph and is expected to make landfall along the coast of Belize later today. The storm is forecast to move over land by Saturday afternoon, bringing maximum sustained winds near 40 mph, with higher gusts expected. Some additional strengthening is possible before landfall. Nadine’s central pressure remains at 1004 MB.

The storm will primarily affect southern Mexico, Belize, and Guatemala, with heavy rainfall and potential flash flooding being the biggest concerns. Rainfall totals could reach up to 8 inches, with isolated areas seeing as much as 12 inches by late Tuesday.

In addition to Nadine, Invest AL94 is moving through the Atlantic without a closed circulation. While some development is possible over the weekend, as it moves westward near Hispaniola, the Turks and Caicos Islands, the southern Bahamas, and extreme eastern Cuba, further development is unlikely due to strong upper-level winds. There’s a 30% chance of formation over the next 2 to 7 days.

Residents in the affected areas are advised to monitor weather updates and take necessary precautions as the storm approaches.
