By Horace Palacio: Tropical Storm Milton has emerged in the Gulf of Mexico and is on a path that could bring it to the west coast of Florida as a major hurricane by mid-week. The storm’s rapid intensification is a major concern, and forecasters are warning of a growing risk of life-threatening storm surge and damaging winds for parts of Florida, potentially starting as early as Tuesday night. A Tropical Storm Warning has been issued for the north coast of the Yucatan Peninsula.
While the exact trajectory and strength of Milton remain somewhat uncertain, residents in Florida are urged to prepare for potential impacts. Heavy rainfall is expected across Florida today and Monday, which could lead to flash floods, urban flooding, and possibly river flooding. This rainfall will be followed by even more intense precipitation directly associated with the storm, expected from Tuesday through Wednesday night.
Meanwhile, the Yucatan Peninsula is bracing for tropical storm conditions, including strong winds and heavy rain, starting Monday. The National Hurricane Center advises residents in both Florida and the Yucatan Peninsula to stay informed about the storm’s progress and follow any guidance provided by authorities.
