By Zoila Palma: Tropical Storm Melissa continues to move west-northwestward across the central Caribbean, bringing the threat of heavy rainfall and flooding to parts of Hispaniola and Jamaica throughout the remainder of the week.
The National Hurricane Center (NHC) has issued a Hurricane Watch for the southwestern peninsula of Haiti, from the border with the Dominican Republic to Port-au-Prince, while a Tropical Storm Watch remains in effect for Jamaica. These alerts mean that hurricane or tropical storm conditions are possible within the next 48 hours, and residents are urged to finalize preparations as the system draws closer.
As of 11:00 a.m. EDT (9:00 a.m. Belize time), the center of Tropical Storm Melissa was located near latitude 14.4°N, longitude 73.6°W, moving slowly at around 2 mph (4 km/h). Maximum sustained winds are near 50 mph (85 km/h), with higher gusts, and forecasters expect gradual strengthening in the coming days.
The storm could reach hurricane strength by Friday, with its projected path bringing it near Jamaica and southwestern Haiti later this week. Meteorologists urge communities across Haiti, the Dominican Republic, and Cuba to closely monitor official updates from their national meteorological services.
