By Breaking Belize News Staff: The National Hurricane Center (NHC) has officially upgraded the low-pressure system in the central Caribbean Sea to Tropical Storm Melissa this morning, Tuesday, October 21, 2025.
Satellite and surface observations indicate that Melissa has developed a well-defined center and is producing sustained winds near 45 mph. Forecasters expect the system to strengthen further as it drifts slowly over the central Caribbean in the coming days.
According to the NHC, heavy rainfall and gusty winds are expected to affect parts of the ABC Islands within the next 24 hours. Residents in Puerto Rico, Hispaniola, Jamaica, and Cuba are being advised to closely monitor the system, as it could bring strong winds, flash flooding, and rough seas later this week.
The U.S. Air Force Hurricane Hunters are scheduled to investigate the storm later today to gather more data. The NHC currently gives the system a near 100 percent chance of development over the next 48 hours and seven days.
At this time, Tropical Storm Melissa poses no immediate threat to Belize, but forecasters are keeping a close eye on its progress.
