By Zoila Palma: The 13th named storm of the Atlantic hurricane season, Tropical Storm Melissa, has developed over the central Caribbean Sea, prompting hurricane and tropical storm watches for parts of the region.
As of 11:00 a.m. EDT , Melissa was located south of Port-au-Prince, Haiti.
The storm is moving west at around 14 mph (22 km/h), with maximum sustained winds near 50 mph (85 km/h) and higher gusts.
Meteorologists expect the system to gradually strengthen over the coming days as it shifts northwest and north.
A Hurricane Watch is now in effect for Haiti’s southern peninsula, stretching from the border with the Dominican Republic to Port-au-Prince, meaning hurricane conditions are possible within 48 hours.
Meanwhile, the Government of Jamaica has issued a Tropical Storm Watch for the island, signaling possible tropical storm conditions in the same timeframe.
Residents in Haiti, Jamaica, the Dominican Republic, and eastern Cuba are urged to closely monitor updates from their national meteorological services as Tropical Storm Melissa continues to strengthen and move toward the northwestern Caribbean later this week.
