By Zoila Palma: Tropical Storm Melissa continues to drift north-northwest in the Caribbean, prompting tropical storm and hurricane warnings for parts of Haiti and Jamaica, where heavy rainfall and life-threatening flooding are expected through the weekend.
As of 2:00 p.m., Melissa was located approximately 200 miles (320 km) south-southeast of Kingston, Jamaica, and 290 miles (470 km) southwest of Port-au-Prince, Haiti.
The storm is moving slowly north-northwest at about 2 mph (4 km/h), with maximum sustained winds near 45 mph (75 km/h) and higher gusts.
The Government of Haiti has issued a Tropical Storm Warning and Hurricane Watch for the southern peninsula from the Dominican Republic border to Port-au-Prince.
Jamaica is also under both a Tropical Storm Warning and a Hurricane Watch as the system moves closer over the next two days.
Forecasters at the National Hurricane Center (NHC) expect gradual strengthening, with Melissa likely becoming a hurricane within 48 hours and potentially a major hurricane by the end of the weekend.
Residents in the affected regions are urged to monitor official updates, prepare for heavy rainfall, and take all necessary precautions against flooding and strong winds.
