Tropical Storm Fay strengthens over Central Atlantic

By Zoila Palma:  Tropical Storm Fay has strengthened while moving westward over the central Atlantic, with maximum sustained winds increasing to near 50 mph (85 km/h), according to the National Hurricane Center.

Forecasters expect a generally westward motion over the next few days, with some additional strengthening possible through tonight before gradual weakening begins Friday.

Meanwhile, a broad area of low pressure south-southeast of the Cabo Verde Islands has a 70% chance of developing into a short-lived tropical depression or tropical storm within the next 48 hours.

The system is expected to move northwestward to northward, while gusty winds, heavy rain and flash flooding could affect the Cabo Verde Islands by Friday.
