By Breaking Belize News Staff: A 26-year-old Salinas bus driver has been convicted of wounding and fined $3,000 after admitting to beating a man whom he claimed was trailing him.
Matthew Bevans, of Lords Bank Village, appeared in the Belize City Magistrate’s Court on Coney Drive, where he changed his initial not-guilty plea to guilty for wounding a call center agent of Lords Bank, Ladyville.
The incident occurred on Wednesday, October 29, 2025. For his guilty plea, Bevans was fined $3,000, plus $5 in court costs, payable by June 30, 2026. In default of payment, he will serve 10 months’ imprisonment.
In delivering sentence, Mannon Dennison told Bevans that believing someone was following him was not a justification to injure another person and that he should have reported the matter to police instead of taking the law into his own hands.
Bevans, who appeared unrepresented, told the court that while he accepted responsibility for the assault, the incident did not unfold exactly as alleged. He claimed that after finishing work, he noticed the complainant following him as he made his way home, prompting him to confront the man. However, when questioned by the magistrate, Bevans confirmed that he was maintaining his guilty plea.
According to police reports, the complainant visited the Ladyville Police Station on Thursday, October 30, 2025, and reported that around 10:00 p.m. the previous night, he was riding his grey bicycle in Lords Bank Village when he passed a blue bus parked on the street. The man said he was suddenly struck on the right side of his face near his ear, causing him to fall from his bicycle.
He reported that Bevans then stood over him and punched him repeatedly in the face, causing injuries to his mouth and resulting in bleeding and loss of consciousness.
The court convicted Bevans on the wounding charge, bringing the matter to an end.
