By Breaking Belize News Staff: The high-profile trial of Kyle Aswan Zetina, 25, accused of a 2018 triple murder, resumed this week after a three-month adjournment due to his attorney’s illness. Zetina faces charges for the brutal killings of Excelsior High School Vice Principal Alarice Andrewin, 44, along with her two friends, Vidal Antonio Yuman, 39, and Maria Lucas, 19, at her home along Mile 10 ½ on the George Price Highway.
The trial began in June but has been marred by delays and challenges, including the illness of Zetina’s attorney, Norman Rodriguez. During the trial, the prosecution has relied on circumstantial evidence, including Zetina’s alleged caution statement admitting to the murders, which was ruled admissible earlier in the trial.
Zetina’s co-accused, Shawn Flores, now 23, was acquitted on June 28, 2024, after Justice Candace Nanton found no evidence linking him to the murders. Flores’ release left Zetina to face the charges alone, with the prosecution presenting testimony from over 16 witnesses. Despite setbacks, including three hostile witnesses whose police statements were admitted as evidence, the Crown, led by Senior Crown Counsel Sheiniza Smith, continues to build its case.
In a surprising move during his trial, Zetina chose to remain silent rather than testify or give a dock statement, a decision his attorney described as unexpected and made out of despair. Attorney Rodriguez remains optimistic as both sides prepare for legal discussions before Justice Nanton delivers her verdict.
The triple homicide, which shocked the nation in 2018, saw the victims found with fatal gunshot wounds to the head. Andrewin and Yuman’s bodies were discovered on a bed, while Lucas was found on the floor. The case gained further attention due to its ties to a respected educator and the violent nature of the crime.
The next court session is expected to determine the fate of Zetina, as the trial approaches its conclusion.
