By Aaron Humes: An early morning bust at Banak Street, Belize City, on Tuesday morning led the Belize Police Department to charge one of their own officers along with his cousin and her common-law husband jointly for possession of a controlled substance. A total of 1,082 grams of marijuana were found inside a barrel at the home the three occupied at the time.
The bust was made after a team of police officers visited the area in response to information about a suspicious transaction occurring at the residence at around 5:25 a.m. During the visit, they encountered Moesha Jorgensen, an IT Support at Heritage Bank, inside the home. When questioned about other residents, she informed the police that her cousin, Police Constable Shedrack Anthony Jorgensen, and her common-law husband, DJ Kharif Sutherland, also resided at the location.
A search of the premises led to the discovery of a police uniform and the marijuana in a transparent plastic bag found in a barrel inside the house. All three occupants were subsequently charged with possession of the illegal substance. At their arraignment, the trio appeared unrepresented, and the homeowner, Sutherland, took full responsibility for the found marijuana. He explained to the Senior Magistrate that he had declared the illegal drugs to the police and pleaded guilty. In light of his guilty plea and first-time offender status, the Senior Magistrate fined Sutherland a total of $2,500 and allowed him until December 31 to pay the fine.
Following Sutherland’s guilty plea, the prosecution withdrew the charges against Sutherland’s girlfriend and her cousin, the police officer Jorgensen, who had pleaded not guilty to the charge. Consequently, they were free to go.
Commissioner of Police Chester Williams told reporters that none of the three are linked to any gangs operating in the area.
